The joy of running with your dog with expert Canicross leader, Emma Cook

Are you a runner but looking for a little something ‘extra’ as part of your training schedule?

Perhaps you are still on the couch, not quite made it to your first 5k and looking for a little ‘Inspo’?

Well let me introduce you to Canicross.

If part of your daily routine is taking your beloved Rover for a walk twice a day and the occasional jog, did you know its an actual ‘thing’ to run strategically with your doggie

and not only that but its an absolute joy

I had an in depth chat with Certified Canicross Trainer, Emma Cook, to find out what it’s all about and the benefits

Emma first started Canicrossing back in 2016 and quickly fell in love with exploring the countryside and working as a team together with her dogs - whilst also keeping fit.

She regularly runs with her 3 year old Collie X Husky, Blue (Sadly her other dog Charlie who she started her Canicross journey with is now retired) and they Canicross distances varying anywhere from 3 miles-10 miles together, as well as the odd race here and there too.

We often hear about the physical benefits of exercise, but what about the psychological benefits of this wonderful pairing.

Here are some of the expected benefits, especially relevant for our theme this week of ‘nature’ and ‘mental health awareness’

  1. Improved mood

  2. Improved confidence in your physical abilities

  3. Reduced stress and an improved ability to cope with stress

  4. Increased feelings of energy

  5. Improved self esteem and body image

  6. Decreased symptoms associated with depression

As you experience these psychological benefits, it is likely that your motivation will increase so that you want to continue, and not only that, being outdoors and experiencing the sights, sounds and feel of nature will add to these positive experiences and outcomes, not just for you but also for your canine best friend.

It’s important that before you contemplate training with your dog you have the right support, guidance and proper kit.
